If you change the length of an intake port, or its size, you effect its velocity. Sometimes you can drastically negatively effect velocity, thus causing one side to lean out (possibly). I.E. You design a custom sheet metal intake for the Z32. On a flow bench its fine. Put it on the car and cylinder #6 is going lean and burning pistons about once a week. You figure out its your intake plumbing causing velocity to starve that cylinder. Voila, change your intake plumbing and problem fixed. I have seen that on several other cars, so I know it is fact.
